Scott Ardoin, ’92, professor of school psychology in the University of Georgia College of Education’s department of educational psychology, has been making news for his work on a method that helps students and teachers reclaim the time they lose transitioning between activities. Scott and former doctoral student Jeffrey Hine developed software called "Keep Busy and Carry On" that gives students cues that a transition time is coming so they can start to make the switch to a new task.
The cues are projected on a screen, along with a timer. Soon after they are introduced to the system, the students begin trying to beat the buzzer by getting ready for the next activity quickly. The soft ware has helped students gain an average of 39 additional minutes of instruction time per week. Scott has also been recognized for his research involving methods for improving reading fluency, vocabulary and comprehension.
