Idea Lab Logo Challenge

Earlier this quarter, art teacher Claire Caffery (right) and Idea Lab coordinator Ashleigh D'Aunoy (left) challenged fifth graders to design a logo for the Idea Lab in the Enrichment Center. The project started with a visit by Susie Gottardi (second from left), a professional graphic designer who is the manager of marketing and design at the Hilliard Museum. She spoke with the fifth graders about the processes involved in logo design. Ms. Claire introduced the students to concepts in graphic design and to the idea of working for a client. They met with their client, Ms. Ashleigh, and asked her questions about her design preferences and her needs for the logo. Finally, the students, working in groups, created several drafts of their designs, and met with their teacher and their client to discuss each iteration. A panel of judges that included Ms. Claire and Ms. Ashleigh, Ms. Gottardi, Dr. Baker, Ms. O, ESA communications director Angie Broussard, and professional graphic designer Kate Ferry (second from right), chose four of the designs, which Ms. Ferry will convert to digital images. One will be used as the logo for the sign on the wall outside of the Idea Lab. The others will be used for various purposes in and around the lab. Thanks to our expert consultants and to our creative designers!
