Community Education

Environmental science students attended the Bayou Vermilion Preservation Association's annual State of the River meeting Thursday night in Lafayette. The association invited agencies and organizations to set up booths, and students were able to interact with representatives from local, state, and federal agencies such as the Department of Environmental Quality, as well as nonprofit organizations such as a group that analyzes Vermilion River water quality. At the UL biology department booth, students met with representatives of a committee that collects environmental data using drones. At the Wildlife and Fisheries booth, the students discussed invasive apple snails, shared that they have been working stop the spread of the snails in St. Julien Park in Broussard, and learned of an advanced method of preventing the snails from reproducing. Madeleine Martin, '23, attended the event to represent the Eco Club, and will lead a group of club members to the park next Friday to continue the work. As students learned how organizations in Acadiana work to educate the community about environmental issues, they enjoyed the opportunity to learn more about their own interests and how they can contribute.
