Advising Legislators
Scarlett Osborn, '25, a member of the Legislative Youth Advisory Council, visited the State Capitol this week to testify and to see a bill LYAC advised on passed into law. LYAC is a council created by state law to foster communication between high school students and the legislature. The council worked with Senator Milligan on a bill to address gun safety in schools in Louisiana. Scarlett says, "The bill makes the Commission and Center for Safe schools permanent. It also includes funding for the development of an anonymous reporting app and a panic button app, and specifically addresses what kids should do in the event that a gun incident happens between classes." Scarlett testified to the Senate Finance Committee on Monday, and the bill passed that day, providing $45 million over five years for the provisions promoted by LYAC. Congratulations, Scarlett!
