ESA Senior Clarke Patrone Named Presidential Scholar

Episcopal School of Acadiana senior Clarke Patrone has been named a Presidential Scholar by the United States Department of Education. Out of more than 3.5 million high school seniors, only 161 students were chosen from across the nation as Presidential Scholars, one of the top honors a graduating senior can receive. Clarke is one of only two from Louisiana, and will receive the Presidential Scholars Medallion during a White House ceremony in June.

Patrone, a resident of Broussard, is a National Merit Semifinalist and president of ESA’s Class of 2017. An AP Scholar with Distinction and a member of the National Honor Society, he serves as assistant editor-in-chief of The Eclectic literary magazine and has built his own cypress pirogue. He is an all-state baseball player and team captain for the Falcons, who will compete in the Division V State Semifinals on Wednesday. Patrone was accepted via early action to Harvard University, and earned a full four-year Army ROTC scholarship.

In applying for the honor, Patrone wrote several essays, including a testimonial about an influential teacher. He chose ESA Science Department Chair Andy LeGoullon.

Inclusion in the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program, now in its 53nd year, is one of the highest honors bestowed upon graduating high school seniors. The Commission on Presidential Scholars, a group of up to 32 eminent citizens appointed by the President, select the Scholars on the basis of superior academic and artistic achievements, leadership qualities, strong character and involvement in community and school activities.
