Connecting Through Clay

Last week Mrs. Barbie's PK4 students dug clay with upper school Ceramics III students on the banks of the Vermilion River at the Lafayette campus. This week the younger students visited the Cade campus ceramics studio to craft Egyptian scarab beetles (aka dung beetles) from the clay they collected. They also enjoyed a snack of cake dung balls and a tour of the upper school art studios.

The dig marks the beginning of an upper school collaborative project between ceramics and environmental science classrooms set to take place next school year. Students are collecting clay rich subsoil from site specific areas chosen for their significance to the ESA community. Students will study soil composition and properties in science, then use the materials for art projects while observing how the different types of clay behave through building, manipulation, and firing.
