Asked about her philosophy for teaching lower school art, Claire Caffery says she shares Pablo Picasso's view: "All children are born artists; the problem is to remain an artist as we grow up." She enjoys witnessing the sponteneity, creativity, and confidence that lower school artists bring to her studio, and takes on the role of cheerleader, remaining positive, and pumping her students up so they leave lower school with joy and confidence in creating. As an art teacher, she loves the freedom to do a little bit of everything over the course of the year.
Ms. Claire has done a little bit of everything in her own journey as an artist. A native of Carencro, she studied art education at UL-Lafayette, taught with the grant-funded art from a cart program in public schools, and served as head of the Cecilia High School art department. A musician with the band The Figs, she's also a book illustrator, and has exhibited her drawings and paintings.
The mother of two young children, Ms. Claire is married to ESA alumnus and former teacher Dr. Josh Caffery, '93. She loves working with lower school students and seeing their pride in what they make with their own hands. Plus, she adds, "They're a hoot!"
