Lower School Closing

The Writes of Spring is an annual regional contest for students in Lafayette Parish and five neighboring parishes, sponsored by the Lafayette Parish Public Library. 

In the Kindergarten-2nd grade Poetry division:
  • 2nd grader Rozi Olivier won 1st place in poetry for “Born on the Bayou.”
  • 1st grader Ceci McCormick won 2nd place in poetry for “Spring Blessings.”

5th-6th Poetry Division:
  • 5th grader Emersen Chen won 1st place in poetry for “Pi.”
  • 5th grader Nora Manganello won 3rd place in poetry for “A Dream.”

Youth Wetlands Writing Contest is another statewide writing competition. It is sponsored by The Coastal Wetlands Planning, Protection, and Restoration Act and was designed to provide young writers the opportunity to unleash their creativity while bringing awareness to the importance of Louisiana’s coastal wetlands, and to celebrate the gifts of Louisiana culture and its community spirit. 

ESA swept the Kindergarten-4th grade poetry category:
  • In 4th grade, Ainsley Frank won 1st place for “Swamp Days.” 
  • In 2nd grade, Rozi Oliver took 2nd place for “Born on the Bayou.”
  • In 4th grade, Emaline Sonnier took 3rd place “Down by the Bayou.”
We also several 5th grade winners in 5th-8th grade poetry category:
  • Arnav Kumar took 2nd place for “The Wetlands.”
  • Bea Lalande took 3rd place for “The Truth.”
Our 5th-grade students placed in the 5th-8th grade Short Fiction category: 
  • Tied for 2nd place were Samaira Srivastava with “The Vicious Alligator” and Elliot Hebert with “A Life for an Alligator.”
  • In 3rd place was Emersen Chen for “A Special Experience.”

French Awards:
Le Grand Concours 
ESA 3rd and 4th graders competed this year in Le Grand Concours, a national competition sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of French. Our students’ scores are compared to the over 3,000 students who competed in the elementary division.

Fifth graders did not compete in the Grand Concour this year. Instead, in collaboration with the Cade Campus World Language department, they took the AAPPL test. It stands for Assessment of Performance toward Proficiency in Languages. AAPPL is not a contest, so there are no medals to be awarded. It is, however, a challenging test, and fifth graders bravely rose to the challenge of written and verbal components of the test.

Math Awards
Students in 4th grade compete in the Continental Math League. This is a national problem solving competition that requires students to complete timed, written tests. There are six challenging word problems on each test. At the end of the competition, top scorers within our school are recognized for their achievement with awards.

Fifth graders from around the globe compete each year in the Math Olympiad. Each month, from November through March, our students take challenging, 30-minute, timed tests. Their scores are combined and compared to students from all 50 states and 30 other countries around the world.

    Headmaster’s and St. Barnabas Awards
    Our last two awards are selected by the entire upper elementary faculty, with input from teachers all the way back to PK3. They recognize fifth-grade students who have epitomized the values of ESA, embraced our mission to develop the habits of scholarship and honor, and lived the words of our school prayer throughout their time with us, however long or short it has been.
