The National Merit® Scholarship Program
An academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. High school students enter the National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test–a test which serves as an initial screen of more than 1.5 million entrants each year–and by meeting published program entry/participation requirements.
In late September, about 34,000 of the approximately 50,000 high scorers on the PSAT receive Letters of Commendation in recognition of their outstanding academic promise.
ESA had two National Merit Commended students in the Class of 2016:
Luke Bravo
Grace Kerns
In early September, about 16,000 students of the 50,000 high scorers, are notified that they have qualified as Semifinalists. Semifinalists are designated on a state representational basis usually scoring in the top ½ of 1% of the state. To be considered for a National Merit® Scholarship, Semifinalists must advance to Finalist standing in the competition by meeting high academic standards, validating their PSAT score with a project score on the SAT Reasoning Exam, and receiving the support of their high school.
In February, some 15,000 Semifinalists are notified advanced to Finalist standing. ESA had two National Merit Finalist in the Class of 2016:
Brittany Chen
Henry Schneider

Sidney Hebert Awards: Sarah Pierre and Riley Nickel
The highest award an athlete at Episcopal School of Acadiana can receive is the Sidney Herbert Award. Awarded by a vote of the school’s coaches, the award is named in honor of the late Sidney Hebert, who was neighbor, friend, protector, and plant manager of the school from the day it moved to Cade. The winners of this award must participate in at least two varsity sports and exemplify excellence on the playing field as well as leadership on the team.
Tom Olverson Award: Herbert Leavitt
The Tom Olverson Award is named for a teacher, administrator, coach and mentor who was instrumental in the founding of ESA. It is given to a student who takes advantage of the opportunities at ESA.
Faculty Award: Henry Schneider
Unlike other graduation awards, the ESA faculty award is not necessarily given every year nor does it have well-defined criteria that dictate who should receive it. Rather, each year, the ESA faculty determines whether or not there is a student in the graduating class whose accomplishments and impact on our school are so outstanding that he or she warrants special recognition.
Bishop’s Medal: Henry Schneider
At commencement each year, Episcopal School of Acadiana recognizes the graduating senior with the highest cumulative GPA with the Bishop’s Medal.
Headmaster’s Award: Luke Bravo
The Headmaster’s Award is given to a student who has made an outstanding contribution to the school; who takes responsibility for the community or some aspect of community life; and who voluntarily, with care and concern, gives consistently, effectively and positively to help build the community. The closest synonym is probably leadership. The award also includes the criterion of strong academic leadership.
Trustees’ Award: Clint Freeland, Jody Kochansky, and Will McKinnon, members of the Class of 1986
The Trustees’ Award was created to recognize exemplary service to the ESA community.
