The 16th Annual Cardboard Boat Regatta

Ninth graders took part in the 16th annual Cardboard Boat Regatta this November. The goal of the project is to build a boat of corrugated cardboard large enough to carry one passenger, to predict the draft when loaded according to Archimedes’ Principle, and to successfully paddle the boat through a course at Spanish Lake. Students worked in groups of two or three to complete the project using a cardboard appliance box, caulk, duct tape, plastic ties and paint. This year, teachers Bullard Jones and Renee Casbon threw in a new challenge. Each paddler had to pick a pumpkin up out of the water at the halfway point and carry it to the finish. Not an easy task!
