Sixth Graders Tour Acadiana Historical and Cultural Sites

Sixth graders explored Louisiana history and culture with a tour of local sites. They began in St. Martinville, where they visited Longfellow-Evangeline State Historic Site to explore the cultural interplay among the diverse peoples along the Bayou Teche. They picnicked under the oak trees for lunch, then headed to the Evangeline Oak and discussed its importance in literature and history. The next stop was the St. Martinville Cultural Heritage Center, home to the African-American Museum and Museum of the Acadian Memorial. A scavenger hunt, journaling and sketching gave students the chance to consider how the exhibits reflect what they are learning in Louisiana Studies.
