A cross-curricular project based on the book A Long Walk to Water has given seventh graders the opportunity to explore the geography, history, and science of east-central Africa and to examine the issue of water scarcity from several different angles. Teachers Christina Hidalgo, Susan Doré, and Missy Gates helped the students forge connections through reading, writing, hands-on experiments, research, presentations, and discussions.
