Speech and Debate

Thank you to ESA Speech and Debate for a wonderful, entertaining, and educational chapel! After an introduction by team captain Abby Thibodeaux, Ellie Gates gave a demonstration of impromptu speaking. The audience chose a topic (strange things) and Ellie had two minutes to prepare a speech about it. Next, Paxton Fischer explained the congressional debate competition, a mock congress in which participants debate bills. Ainsley Bourgeois performed a dramatic interpretation. Finally, Paxton explained Lincoln-Douglas debate, and Ivy Anseman debated with a guest, math department chair Dr. Stuart Cornwell, about whether AI will eventually replace teachers.

Social studies teacher and team coach Rex Jones wrapped up with a special announcement. Paxton has qualified for Nationals! He will compete in the Congressional Debate category in Des Moines, Iowa, in June, as one of only two students from Louisiana, and 100 from throughout the country. Paxton is a freshman, and this is his first year competing in speech and debate. A phenomenal accomplishment! Congratulations to Paxton and to the whole team for a spectacular revival of ESA Speech and Debate!
