Writing Awards

The Writes of Spring is an annual regional contest for students in Lafayette Parish and five neighboring parishes, sponsored by the Lafayette Parish Public Library.

Our Lower School winners are:

Youth Wetlands Writing Contest is another statewide writing competition. It is sponsored by The Coastal Wetlands Planning, Protection, and Restoration Act and was designed to provide young writers the opportunity to unleash their creativity while bringing awareness to the importance of Louisiana’s coastal wetlands, and to celebrate the gifts of Louisiana culture and its community spirit.

ESA swept the Kindergarten through fourth-grade poetry category:

In 4th grade
- Cora Gray won 3rd place for “Murk Waters”
- Samuel Riggs won 2nd place for “The Bald Cypress”
- David Herrington won 1st place for “In the Bayou where the Cypress Trees Grow”

We also have another 4th grade winner in the Kindergarten through fourth-grade short fiction category:

Eliza Manganello won 1st place for “Legend of the Bayou”

In the 5th grade through 8th grade poetry category:

William James won 2nd place for “The Price of that Black Gold”

Historic New Orleans Writing Contest

For this year’s Student Writing Contest, student writers used their creativity and historical knowledge to invent imaginary identities for unknown New Orleanians. In 200 words or less, each student wrote a creative description of the person or people in the portrait. THNOC received an overwhelming response for this year’s prompt with over 1,000 elementary, middle, and high school entries submitted by students from across all 50 states. Cooper Kennedy’s submission was awarded First Place. His entry is published on The Historic New Orleans Collection’s website listing his name, grade, and school alongside all of the other winners. In addition he was awarded a prize of $350.00! Congratulations, Cooper!

Math Awards

Continental Math League

Students in 4th grade compete in the Continental Math League. This is a national problem-solving competition that requires students to complete timed, written tests. Each test has six challenging word problems. At the end of the year-long competition, top scorers within our school are recognized for their achievement with awards.

Math Olympiad

5th graders from around the globe compete each year in the Math Olympiad. The goals of Math Olympiad include stimulating enthusiasm and love for mathematics, strengthening mathematical intuition, fostering mathematical creativity and ingenuity, and providing the satisfaction, thrill and joy of meeting challenges. Each month, from November through March, our students take challenging, 30-minute, timed tests. Their scores are combined and compared to students from all 50 states and 30 other countries around the world.

St. Barnabas Award

In 2004, ESA Lower School was established on the grounds of Saint Barnabas Church. Our founding location was true to the words in our alma mater: a place of study and a place of play, a place where I made the friends I love today, where excellence was pursued and gained. To honor that history, we established the Saint Barnabas Award to acknowledge students who strive to live out the virtues of our school prayer while maximizing their ESA experience.

Headmaster’s Award

The Headmaster's Award is presented each year to a 5th-grade student who strives to exemplify “excellence from within.” The qualities considered for this award include academic excellence, leadership, and contributions to the well-being of the community. Fifth-grade students who were considered for this award have maintained Headmaster’s List designation on their report cards in every grading period where grades are earned while at the Lower School.
