Rex Jones, Teacher of the Year

We're thrilled to announce that upper school social studies teacher Rex Jones has been named the 2025 Louisiana History Teacher of the Year by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History!

ESA alumna, Class of 2025

Mr. Jones has such a good relationship with the students, and you can tell he has a genuine passion for what he teaches and contributes to the school.
Mr. Jones teaches Civics, AP U.S. History, AP U.S. Government & Politics, and AP Comparative Government & Politics to ESA juniors and seniors. Since arriving at ESA in 2023, he has helped to elevate the Social Studies Conference to a showcase of exceptional student work. Mr. Jones has revived the long-dormant ESA Speech & Debate team, and accompanied two students to Nationals. And his students point to his classes as some of their favorites at ESA. Here's what they've said:

  • Mr. Jones is so invested and genuinely interested in what he teaches that it makes it more fun to learn the subject matter.
  • In APUSH, I genuinely enjoyed learning the material, and Mr. Jones was a super engaging teacher!
  • In AP Gov, Mr. Jones does a great job of presenting the information in a digestible and entertaining manner.
  • Mr. Jones is able to balance productive critical thinking and reasoning with humor in the classroom.
  • Mr. Jones manages to be both an amazing educator and a positive role model who's humble and very generous with his time.
Asked about a favorite project, Mr. Jones says, "In Civics, to better understand the criminal process and the legal system, we put Goldilocks on trial for criminal trespass and simple theft (of porridge). The students are the lawyers, witnesses, and juries, and they always impress me with their knowledge and wit." Read more from Mr. Jones in our Q&A, and be sure to watch our Fly on the Wall video an immersive project in AP U.S. History, both below.
