Madeleine Martin, '23

Madeleine Martin, '23, attends the University of Florida, where she is studying Psychology: Behavioral and Cognitive Neuroscience and Biology with a health disparities minor on the pre-med track. She spends her time volunteering for a pediatric organization called Footprints, as well as with the Norman Fixel Institute for Neurological Diseases. She also serves as the UF Neuroscience Club’s Peer Mentorship Director, as a General Chemistry II Undergrad TA, and as a supplemental instruction leader. During the school year, Madeleine works at Gainesville Dermatology, and is a research assistant in the Fuller Lab studying how spinal cord injuries affect breathing and Pompe disease. In the summer of 2024, she completed an internship at Park Place Surgical Hospital in Lafayette. Through the study abroad program UF in the UK: Health Disparities and Health Charities, Madeleine participated in archival research on disease and health disparities in London, met with Edinburgh college students to compare the UK and US healthcare systems, and worked with non-profits such as the British Heart Foundation.

“ESA taught me how to write!” Madeleine says. “I am so thankful that my teachers provided me with the tools to successfully think critically and create connections between concepts. ESA set the foundation for how I study for my classes.”

When she’s not working hard, Madeleine shared that she loves to hang out with friends, especially with her best friend Lucia from ESA! She also loves trying new foods around Gainesville, listening to music and attending concerts, and going to football games, gymnastics meets, and basketball games.

To younger Falcons, she says, “My biggest piece of advice would be to follow your interests. It is completely okay to not know where you're going. You don't need to ever have your entire life or the next chapter of your life planned out, and it's important to let your passions guide you. I also think it's important to keep a balance between school and everything outside of it. Maintaining that balance will help you succeed.”

Thank you, Madeleine!
