Dr. Kat Movassaghi

A Lafayette native, Dr. Kat Movassaghi has been teaching for 29 years and has been a part of the Falcon family for 25 of those years. She has taught middle and upper school drama, English II, English 7, and public speaking. For the past six years, she has served as Head of the Upper School, and this spring she found herself back in the classroom teaching advanced drama and English IV. Here's our Q&A with Dr. Mova:

What do you love most about your days at ESA?

Seeing the students, watching them go through the day. I love the outdoor campus and how looking at the trees and sky make me feel — they make me happy and refreshed. I love the campus in general. I also enjoy interacting with faculty and making stupid jokes.

How do you teach habits of scholarship and honor to your students?

I model it in my work ethic; I don’t expect anything of the students that they wouldn’t expect of me. I hold myself to a very high standard as a teacher. Our students deserve the best in teaching practices, and I constantly strive to improve myself and to deliver engaging lessons.

What is your favorite project, unit, assignment or routine that you have created in your curriculum?

I love creating lesson plans that connect history and current life. I also love directing and analyzing shows, or teaching young students to try something new on the stage. Anything about exposing kids to theatre. Currently, in teaching English IV, I like trying to light a fire with themes from what we are reading to their current life.

What do you do outside of ESA that is part of who you are, feeds you joy, gives you purpose, or rejuvenates your soul?

Gardening. I love gardening and I love arranging flowers. It feeds my artistic side as far as working with colors, texture, shape, mood. I like to complete puzzles and I love to read and talk about books. In my empty-nest chapter, I want to travel and maybe perform more.

If you had a year to study anything in the world, what would you be passionate about learning at this time in your life?

Forensic science

What would you tell a new parent/student or prospective parent/student about ESA?

We are in the business of making good people. If you want to practice character building and challenging thought, you need to be here!

Thanks, Dr. Movassaghi!
