Scott Chappuis, '97

Scott Chappuis, '97, graduated from the College of Charleston in South Carolina in 2000 with a B.S. in marine biology. He spent 2001-2006 in a career as professional sailor. Scott says his favorite part about being a sailor was the moment he sailed out of sight of land. “At that moment you know that it’s just you, your ship, your shipmates, and the sea. There is something really powerful about that moment. It ultimately leads to a special bond between you and your shipmates and a bond between you and the sea that cannot really be explained in words. Melville probably got the closest in the opening paragraph of Moby Dick.”

In 2006, Scott returned to Louisiana to pursue a Master of Architecture at University of Louisiana at Lafayette. With a passion for sustainable design, he has acquired licenses in four states and has completed projects all over the world, including restaurants, hotels, schools, churches, libraries, recording studios, hospitals, and private residences. Scott serves as Director of Design and Vice-President at Moliere Chappuis Architects.

Earlier this year, his firm landed the bid for the Louisiana Museum of Music in Downtown Lafayette, a project that he says is a dream come true. “We will transform the historic Lafayette Hardware Store, built in the 1890’s, into a cutting-edge museum that celebrates Louisiana’s rich musical heritage," Scott says. "A building like this is an important part of Downtown Lafayette’s cultural portfolio, and it is our task to restore it in a thoughtful way: to give it new life while honoring its history. ACA has tasked the design team with creating a world-class museum that is for locals and visitors from all over the globe, and we have endeavored to do just that.”

"ESA taught me to be a critical thinker and to be curious about the world,” Scott adds. Both of these lessons are tied into his professional efforts and how he approaches life. He encourages our Falcons to remember that “the journey can be more important than the destination so enjoy the ride while you are in the moment.”

Thanks, Scott!
